What can i say to my friend who's beloved staffy was killed on sunday?

He took Milly for her walk and they were attacked by two pit-bulls. He fought them for a full 30 minutes, tried to stop them attacking Milly but he was so badly injured he couldn't carry on. Milly was still alive when the police turned up but they had to shoot her because of her injuries, my friend is badly injured and has lost all use of his fingers on his writing hand, has broken and fractured fingers, almost lost one of his arms and will need plastic surgery to mend his many wounds. He feels so guilty because he couldn't save her but against two of them, what chance did he have? I'm collecting money to have her privately cremated and i don't for one minute expect any of you to contribute in that way but i am asking for one thing?
