How long can and should a long distance relationship last before it does not make any sense anymore?

I have a foreign suitor that I met through the internet. I’ve guess I’m starting to fall from him but I’m afraid because he is too far. Can anyone here tell me how long can a long distance relationship last? Or this is just a piece of ****. BTW, he is from United States while I’m in Ukraine.
