Why do adults feel the need to patronize teenagers and treat them as second cl citizens?

As a teenager, i feel like i am not a kid and yet the adult majority constantly pushes my age group away from them. it's hard to find a place while being treated in a subordinate, condescending matter. Why do adults feel the need to act this way toward teens?
