you could use cheap seed but you will regret it. you don't need the "top notch" stuff, just good seed. you don't need a roller, just loosen top layer of soil, spread seed with fertilizer spreader. keep soil surface moist until seed is well established. when things get going you want to water heavily but not often this will encourage deep roots.
